Paducah Kentucky

 First overnight stop. DanaRiley and I left the house at 7:45am and arrived in Paducah about 2:45. Not a bad drive along I40. There were two areas with construction delays-one just before my exit in Paducah that was 10 miles long. Paducah has a wide expanse and is very flat  it sits on the Ohio River about 5-10 miles from the Illinois state line. I like to ask the front desk attendants what I should see while visiting their city. This answer was “The National Quilt Museum, it’s very popular!”  I drove by.


We made 3 or 4 stops for stretching our legs and to let DanaRiley sniff to her hearts  delight. I did give her trazadone to keep her calm this afternoon…what a lifesaver for me, but she’s pretty out of it tonight.

When I lived in South Carolina, I learned that there’s a cemetery on the property of most Baptist churches. I find these old cemeteries interesting and revealing. Some families from the 1800’s have separate areas for the extended family including slaves. There’s a cemetery in McCormick, SC called Badwell cemetery with the small white cement placards for the slaves of a few families. The history tells me that they were beloved members of this particular family. Now, I know this isn’t the case with many families with slaves.

Anyway, the first stop today was about 40 miles past Knoxville, TN at a rest stop on interstate 40. I’ve found the rest stops in the south to be very welcoming, clean and safe. This one was no different in that respect. However, this is the ONLY rest stop I’ve ever seen that had a cemetery on the property. It appeared there were similar white stone placards in the fenced off area with the other headstones. The headstones had deaths listed from the mid 1800’s through the mid 1900’s. I thought it was very interesting and strange. 


I talked to Alene today and she sounded good. She and Abbey will be driving from Denver to the FF tomorrow.  I’ll be driving from Paducah to Platte City, Missouri, about 450 miles, for the 2nd night on the road. Until then…

Wheel of Fortune Pat Sajak Oceanside I love this picture! Today was a great day! Any day putting my feet in the sand and ocean, a cool breeze in the air, the marine layer hovering above, with my friend of 45 years by my side, is a beautiful experience.  Everything that happened yesterday that made it a very tough day, was long forgotten and never spoken about.  We headed to Oceanside and walked in the sand and watched the surfers claim the perfect waves for their ride. The Funny Farm

 Arrived!  There’s a delay in posts to the blog because there’s no wi-fi here. I’ll do my best with this early in the morning. Also, I decided not to send out the link until I arrived. We got here Sunday late afternoon and Alene, Abbey and her friend Deena were waiting. Abbey and Deena left very early Monday morning for Alabama where Deena lives.  Abbey will fly back to Denver on the 18th. Alene looked very tired and a bit disheveled…she cried. We had dinner, visited and went to bed.  We were all up early Monday; Abbey and Deena left and Alene and I just talked and laughed until we decided to go into town (Ogalalla) for some groceries. The FF is 25 or so miles from town but we cross over the dam and it’s scary how low the water is. Also visible from the road is some of the damage that the tornado caused a couple weeks ago as well as damage from a recent hail storm. Backward Steps

 I abruptly ended the last post as we were leaving to go to a park where I could walk DanaRiley. I thought I’d be able to walk her around her but outside of their lawn area, the roads have stickers and DanaRiley had some in her pads the other day. So we went to the vacant sports complex and walked, ran my car through a car wash to get rid of some of the 5000 dead bugs on the window and front bumper, and we picked up a salad for lunch from Wendy’s.  Yesterday, Alene wondered aloud how it came to be that I was at the FF with her. If you read my first post, maybe you remember that she asked me to spend the summer here with her. I reminded her of that and she was stunned and remembers no part of those early conversations. But she believed me and we both laughed and said “crunch crunch” (her brain crunching). Well today she wanted to pay for the Wendy’s salads but didn’t bring her purse.  So I told her she could pay when we pick up a salad on our trip to California. She looked...
